I'm interested in trying out a village homestay followed by a safari in Kenya just dont know what it should cost and if the few quotations I have got are outrageous.
any ideas of average costs for a family of 4???

You could try this approach. Ask your agent to see if there are any families in some of the Maasai villages near the camps/lodges who would be interested in house guests.
Once I arranged a several-day stay on a whim after I had arrived in Kenya and it worked well. I enjoyed my stay so much I went back to visit the same family the next year. What made it work was that some of their teenage children were home from school and we could communicate in English. Without their English skills, it would have been a less meaningful visit. For one person I gave them about $100 for 2-3 days, 2 nights. If it worked for me last minute, I am sure you could plan something with an agent well in advance.
If you want more specifics, you can email me.
