Egypt family vacation

We will go to Egypt in april for 14 days with the kids. After countless hours of research, we have decided to visit Cairo for 2 days take the train to Aswan ,take a Nile cruise between Aswan and Luxor for 4 days, go to Hurghda for 3 days, take the ferry to Sharm ,spend 3 days, take the bus to Bahriya ,spend 2 days, return to Cairo and hope we have enough money to return home.
I have already booked the tour with Ican travel in Egypt and , now the we have the airline tickets in hand , we are willing to learn as much about Egypt as we can, before we leave.
We will very, very thankful if anyone can help us understand the Do Not Do rules for visitors, the good , the bad and the ugly in the places we will be visiting, the Must Do list, the tipping , the food and alcohool rules, the dress code for me , my wife , our 17 year old daughter , our 12 year old son and ...anything else that any of You consider that we should know before we go! I have read few travel books regarding Egypt , so I have some kind of understanding about the places we will be visiting but past experience proved us that the personal information that we get from other travelers is always a better source.
Thank You in anticipation for any advice and hope to make this trip one of our best!

Try using the Search window and type in "egypt + clothing" or "egypt + tipping" or things like that. You should get a load of information.

Just one quick note - there is often lots of advice given for what women/girls should and shouldn't wear, but sometimes boys are left out! Men/boys do not wear shorts in Egypt. As tourists, you will be okay in shorts on the cruise, at the beach and in the desert. But when touring Cairo, I would recommend long pants. During the 4 years we lived there, my husband and sons never went to dinner, into town, or to the airport wearing shorts.

Just out of curiosity - why 3 days in Hurghada and 3 days in Sharm? Unless you REALLY like diving and snorkling, it seems like overkill.

You can expect Egypt to be hot during the day.Light clothing & like grcxx3 suggested, coverup!decent clothing like trousers for men & no short skirts for women must be followed.
Caps/hats & suntan a must.

On one side it could warrant unwanted male attention & on the other it hurt Egyptian sentiments. Its also good to respect their tradition and culture.
Some men ( my experience, where our women folk were hazzled, had to be ticked off )tried to act 'fresh' with our womenfolk.Ignore taunts and move on.Some ask for 'trophy' snaps. This was discussed in an earlier posting. They put their arms around women as they pose & tourists have had bad experiences. Avoid such situations.

As regarding alcohol, you may not get your fav brand of liquor. Its better you buy your qouta in the Airport dutyfree.
You could tip your guide at the end of the trip( at your disretion). We would pay EP5 per baggage handled. In the cruise we handed over the tip at the reception for the common pool.

I wore shorts everyday and the majority of tourists wore shorts - men & women. It was a miilion degrees outside (October) and would never have lasted in long pants. Forget the "no shorts" suggestion. Wear them and you will fit in with 99% of the tourists. There were never any comments made to us or anyone about their dress, the entire trip (4 days Cairo 4 day cruise and one day AbuSimbal sp??)

Alcohol - could get in our hotels and cruise ships with no problem.

This is just one couples experience.

Can men/boys get away with wearing shorts in Cairo? Sure. There aren't any "clothing police" that will give you a hard time.

Is it hot - you better believe it! But my husband always found cool, lightweight pants to be more comforable in the heat than having his legs exposed to it in shorts.

Plain and simple (and this has been debated many times on this board) - men/boys wearing shorts is not considered proper amoung Egyptians. You are in a foreign country with a different set of cultural standards. I just think it's a matter of simple "respect."

I believe the replies re: "no shorts" or abbreviate clothing, referred to Cairo or walking around the souk in Luxor or Aswan.

Sure, you will find, and it seems quite acceptable to wear walking-length shorts (men & women) when touring out at the pyramids, sphinx, along the Nile cruise stops of Kom Ombo, Edfu, Esna, Valley or Kings/Queens - it can be hot at all of these places certain times of the year. But for the Museum, Old Cairo or the Bazaar in Cairo, pants or skirts are more appropriate.

Many threads (search for Egypt, clothing) do recommend, loose guaze-type pants or skirts as being appropriate in Cairo or other towns, if traditional slacks would feel too uncomfortable. And loose-fitting gauze-type tops or camp-shirts are very comfy in the heat. With the sun beating down on you, it's actually better being covered somewhat.

We did notice and one of our guides indicated that many of the Egyptian men seen wearing loose fitting galabeyas, are wearing shorts beneath (not their wears, LOL!), but regular shorts.

Don't forget the SPF, a hat and have plenty of water with you.

We are planning a almost identical trip with our 2 kids in late April. Mohamed with ICAN was most helpful in helping us plan this and book cheap air tickets. Please let us know if you find any useful information that will help us, and we will do likewise. I don't have a quote yet.

You have a full day at the end for the Khan el Khalili, yet you are cramming the pyramids and the museum into one day up front? I would recommend that you spend a full day seeing pyramids (remember there are lots of them to see and the 3 at Giza are some of the least interesting and most annoying with all the touts) and then have the one day in town for a morning Museum tour and an afternoon/evening shopping tour.
You will have had numerous shopping opportunities before this date so you may not need all that much merchandise from the Khan and I would think it would be hard to spend a full day at the Khan by yourself. If you have a good map or a trustworthy guide, you might explore more of Islamic Cairo instead near the Khan, but plan something else for this day to do as well.

Again, I suggest you rethink your pyramid day. Sakkara, and Dashure are easy enough to get to and they are both much nicer to visit than Giza. Of course you MUST visit Giza as they are obviously the most famous pyramids, but seeing all 3 fields is most interesting and easy enough to do in a day.

i suggest packing some food with you, especially for the cruise. everyone in my tor group got sick off the food, so after the second day, i simply stopped eating because i couldn't hold anything down. i lost 7 pounds in 10 days. now if i travel somewhere that i am uncertain about the food i bring things like peanut butter crackers and trail mix so i don't have to fast for the duration fo the trip!
