Yellow Fever Shots

Hi Sandi,

Your posts have been very helpful for our trip to Africa. I have phone the
High Commission for Tanzania and have been told that we do not need to have a yellow fever shot as we are coming from Canada via Amsterdam. Not sure what to do. Where does your info come from. We are leaving in two weeks and want to make sure we have everything covered. Appreciate your input as you appear to have a lot of expertise on Africa.

Thanks,

Ron

We will also be arriving in Tanzania from Canada via Amsterdam in March. With the recent posts, I now have an appointment to get the yellow fever shot. My concern is that the Tanzanian govenment could change the rules before we arrive and make it mandatory for everyone arriving to have the shot.

Sorry, I'm not Sandi, and I'm sure she'll see this. But, in the meantime you might want to re-read the other recent posts on this. I think one of them had a link to the specific country information. I am pretty sure that since you're coming from the U.S. and from Canada, and only going through Amsterdam that you don't need the vaccination. That would change if you were first going to other countries, Rwanda for example, or transiting through Nairobi.

I'm off to Tanzania in two weeks as well. Advice I got from my travel clinic (USA) re: yellow fever shot is that inoculation is not required by TZ government for visitors coming from US via Amsterdam. However, their advice was to get one anyway as YF is a very devastating disease, so why take a chance? Check around though as there is a shortage of single dose vials right now.
Make sure you are up to date on your tetanus and polio boosters. And, if you are of a certain age, check into getting a pneumonia
shot. Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines are also recommended.
Have a wonderful time, Ron, and we just might cross paths on the Serengeti. Anne
