Read many of the suggested books about Africa before my trip last Oct. and enjoyed them all. Happened across this in a spa's reading room recently, thought someone may want to add another book on Africa to their list.

Nine Hills to Nanbonkaha

Written by Sarah Erdman, it relates her 2 years in the Peace Corps in a village in Cote D'Ivoire. Shows us their daily life, how she tries to overcome ancient beliefs in sorcery to instruct the villagers in modern health measures, how she becomes a loved and respected presence among them and how she loved them. A good read.

I read that book a few years ago. It is really good.
Another favorite book from a peace corp volunteer is The Ponds of Kalambai. I read it waaaay before the Nine Hills book. Thank you for reminding me of it.

Safarimama, I've so enjoyed Brian Jackman's articles in the "Travel Africa" magazine. I'll have to try to find his books. I'm currently reading a book loaned to me by Aknards, "Little Boys Come from the Stars"... really entertaining, great storytelling!

"Where the Wild Things Were", by William Stoltzenburg. The evolution of thought & theory leading to today's understanding that ecosystem diversity & stability is controlled from the top down -- by the apex predators in that ecosystem. Remove the apex predators (whether wolf, or lion, or fox, etc.) and, eventually, the ecosystem crashes completely...

Wow-what a great blog. I have 2 pages of books to request at our library. Thinking about going to South Africa in a little over 3 years-going to Egypt/Jordan next year.
I read a book about a year ago called "Slave" True story about a young girl snatched out of her village. Can't remember author but I couldn't put it down.
thank you all for wonderful suggestions & I have read a lot of what was rec'd. Chris

There are currently three active threads on the Africa forum about reading books.

I am going to make a hypothesis that we are all reading more off the forum than on the forum these days.

Hi Shaytay,
I never saw this message before. I was traveling at the time (in Africa). I'm glad that you have enjoyed Brian Jackman's writing as have I. Here's an article he wrote about the trip last December, when I met him in Samburu.

I hope you're enjoying his books. They are available used on Amazon. I think they're out of print.
