Hey Lynn, we're overlapping!! ... I just asked you about the question you posted on the African Wildlife Experience Thread
.
It's difficult to get information on this reserve - I'm hoping someone has been there within the last year or so.

I will mention one thing about this reserve. I saw it mentioned on a safari operator's website at a really good price. That's what prompted my question posted a long time ago.
When I called the operator about including this area as a major component of a South African safari, they downplayed it and steered me towards various Sabi Sands properties.

Thanks for the heads up Lynn - I read on one website that they have very recently introduced some 'common' species so it looks like it might be a few years before it is 'up and coming'... I will try to find out some more.

Nothing to add except I saw this auction for a lodge in Welgevonden while browsing Luxurylink http://www.luxurylink.com/auctions/a...2&nav=dest

Hi there! The Welgevonden is a beautiful game reserve in South Africa, and has some excellent lodges, Makweti definately being on of the highly recommended ones. A plus for the Welgevonden, is that it is malaria free. A negative fact is that they don't do any off road driving as they do in Madikwe, Sabi Sands, Timbavati and many others. This means that if the game viewing vehicle is following a lion, and the lion walks off the road and into the bush, you will not be able to follow it any further. You can merely see the animals that are on and right next to the road. You also asked about Madikwe (which is also malaria free). Personally I would choose a lodge in Madikwe above one in the Welgevonden. Big 5 game viewing in Madikwe will be better, and you have the added advantage of following the animals through the bush, and spending more quality time with them. Home to the big 5, cheetah, wild dogs, brown and spotted hyena, to name but a view, Madikwe Game Reserve offers prime game viewing! There are numerous lodges in Madikwe, ranging from affordable (Mosethla Bush Camp), to moderate (Madikwe River Lodge, Tuning Safari Lodge, Tau), to ultra luxurious and expensive (Madikwe Hills, Mateya Safari Lodge, Etali, Makanyane). Hope this helps - let me know if you need more info!!
