My friend is planning his 50th and wants several couples to join him. He has suggested flying into Marseilles and spending 4 nights in Provence. Then, he wants to end up in Tunis. The hotels and daytime options are all great, but it seems odd to split France and Africa. I would think that Morocco would make more sense than FR. Anyone have suggestions on a great pairing w/ Tunis?

Sicily. I think it is easier to combine Tunisia with France or Italy than it would be to combine it with Morocco, because of flights. Check it out yourself. Tunis is closer to Sicily than to Morocco.

Flights from Morocco are easy (we did Tunisia and Morocco a couple of years back). But although we want to revisit Tunis (the Bardo) when we are next in Sicily, transportation is problematic -- flights take you back to FCO and the ferry is not 100% reliable.

I should have checked before I posted. It has been a long time since I flew from Palermo to Tunis..

France and Tunisia are a good coupling as most flights to Tunisia are connecting through France anyway (I guess also depending from where you are coming from). Plus you'll see an interesting juxtaposition of the "colonizer" and the "colony". The 2nd language is french, and you'll be suprised how Tunisia doesn't fit the "africa" stereotype (even Tunisians don't think that they are in Africa!).

If you do France or Italy with Tunis, then you could consider taking a ferry, as well.

I do think that flights from Morocco to Tunis will be much more expensive than from France/Italy, if thats a factor.

I am trying to plan a trip to Tunisia with 2 major questions:

(1) how to get there
(2) how to get around the country

(1) How to Get there.

I am traveling with 1 other person in the last 2 weeks of August. We are trying to get to Tunis -- but want to know the least expensive way to get there.

Flights from the US are at best $1,600 and even taking the boat (SCNM) from Marselle is $700pp --- in addition to a trip to/through France.

Any ideas for how to travel from the East Coast (LGA or BOS) creatively?

(2) How to get around Tunisia.

Should we plan to hire a car and driver? Is a rental car a safe option?

Should we arrange for UNESCO site guides beforehand or once in country?

Also, what is the best way to travel from Tunis to Djerba?

I think France and Tunis are a good combination. Not so excited about Tunis & Morocco, but it's only a gut feeling and not a well thought out reasoning.

I've been to both (Morocco in 1971 & Tunis about a year & a half ago and liked both of them, so it isn't that I don't like Morocco. In fact, I'm going back to Morooco in the fall to see the parts I missed.
