Trying to decide between the above alternatives from Luxor - some say the flying via Cairo to Amman and then driving to Petra is much easier (I can do it in one day from Luxor to Cairo to Amman I think - right?) - others say take the fast ferry/experience Aqaba - it's less hassle, etc. I'm hoping the new fast ferry may be helping the timeliness - any comments?
We'll have car and drivers picking us up at all points.
Thanks

Elizabeth,
You should check to be sure you don't actually have to change airports in Cairo in order to make your connection.
I took the fast ferry from Sinai in 2003 back and forth. I'd do that again in a heartbeat over the hassle of connecting thru Cairo. Additionally, the drive to Petra from Amman is pretty much all day whereas the drive from the ferry to downtown Aqaba is really short. From Aqaba its a 2-3 hour drive to Petra and you pass by Wadi Rum, too.
The ferry experience was a blast. The meet & greet is so convienient.

That's what my small group of 3 is planning in March/April
We're planning 3-4 days in Sinai to relax/snorkel, visit Mt Sinai, etc. W prefer the overland route if for nothing else but the sights and sound and experience of it. Can't quite experience it from 30,000 feet.

Have to say i think the flying idea has merit too - i've heard reports of the ferry being horrible (fast crossing, 8hr wait beforehand) - check out the blog on petra on frommer's.com. Also, the times you'e been given on the driving are a little inaccurate. It's not going to take you a day to get to petra from amman, it's a 2.5 hr trip. Aqaba to Petra, if you decide to go that way, will take you an hour and a half.
