Travel Insurance Question

Has anyone used STA for travel insurance? It's sure a lot cheaper if it covers everything. http://www.statravel.com/cps/rde/xch...linsurance.htm

Can someone read their policy and tell me what is left out? We are spending $8500 on airfare for 4, plus about $10k in non-refundable prepaid expenses.

Also, would I still need Medjet? It sounds like you are covered with this policy as long as a doctor says it's necessary. With Medjet, "MedjetAssist transports members without regard to medical necessity."

STA's plan EMERGENCY EVACUATION, REPATRIATION OF REMAINS, AND MEDICAL EXPENSE

The Insurer will pay benefits for Covered Expenses if an Injury or Sickness commencing during the course of the Trip results in Your necessary Emergency Evacuation. An Emergency Evacuation must be ordered by a legally licensed Physician who certifies that the severity of Your Injury or Sickness warrants an Emergency Evacuation. Emergency Evacuations must be verified, approved, and arranged in advance by AIG Assist. The Insurer will also pay Repatriation of Remains benefits for Transportation to return Your body to Your point of origin in the event of Your death during Your Trip. The Insurer will not cover any expenses provided by another party at no cost to You or already included in the cost of the Trip.

Emergency Evacuation means:
a) Your medical condition warrants immediate Transportation from the place where You are injured or sick to the nearest hospital where appropriate medical treatment can be obtained; and/or

b) After being treated at a local hospital, Your medical condition warrants Transportation to Your origination point to obtain further medical treatment or to recover.

Here are some earlier threads on STA insurance -

Between the differing answers some of us were getting over the phone from their reps, I'd get whatever features are important to you clarified in writing if there's a question.

Soo. Went through Patty's threads. Still not really sure about STA. Some of the threads are old. Anyone have any recent experience with STA? Thanks!

(Last time I'll ask.) ;-)

sundowner et al, did you ever figure out the answer to the question of whether you need Medjet if you have STA? I'm trying to figure it out also. It sounds STA will send you to your hospital at home, but it may be up to the docs rather than your choice.

givingback - I haven't done any research on STA, but your comment on MedJet is close to my judgement as well.

From what I can tell from fineprint:
MedJet will evacuate (back to home or specialty, etc) as long as you are going from in-patient care and it would be necessary to have in-patient treatment where you'd be received. Most other policies I've looked at with evacuation coverage also have the doctor's making a judgement call and only when they determine (sometimes with agreement from insurance company) you must be treated elsewhere - would they evacuate you. But I'd also guess that may mean a hospital in Europe (or their choice?) may be picked rather than your home country.

MedJet may be good addition if you do a lot of travel anyway. It's a annual membership.

For our trip, though, I'm not going to choose both MedJet and comprehensive insurance (going with SRI most likely) since it does double up. Will be picking up the Flying Doctors insurance though to get us from camp to Nairobi for medical exam if needed.
