Trans-atlantic flight landings

When we made our Egypt trip a few weeks ago, we flew the trans-atlantic hop with Egypt Air, In spite of the service being less than memorable, the flights, both there and back, had an interesting and unexpected ending.

As soon as the plane was on the ground and rolling, the passengers broke out in applause.

There wasn't anything notable in the flight. Pretty routine.

I've been on a lot of flights and never had the passengers start applauding when the plane landed.. Has anyone else encountered this sort of thing? Trans-Atlantic or Egypt Air.

There was no applause for EA domestic flights to Luxor, Abu Simbel, or Cairo.

We were in Egypt a couple months ago and there was no cheering on any of our EA flights.

Hmmmmm........

Like I said - on our domestic flights - Cario - Luxor, Aswan-Abu Sibel, and Abu Simbel - Cairo - nobody applaiuded. Just the trans-atlantic flights. Did you fly EA trans-atlantic, too?

I’ve been on at least 20 flights in North America where some people starting clapping upon landing. Though I haven’t heard it in at least ten years.

We we were on a flight from Istanbul to Cairo when people starting clapping. But I think that was Turkish Air. Other passengers stood up as soon as the plane touched the ground. That was a lot dumber than the clapping.

Two possibilities I can think of: ironic if it was a bad landing, i.e. the plane bounced once or twice before settling; or, relief they were on the ground in one piece after a turbulent flight.
