Tipping in Kenya and Tanzania
We leave for a group tour to both countries in a few days. The last time we were there, the tour company took care of all of our tips except for the tour director. Could someone please tell me who you tip on a group tour and give me some idea as to how much one should tip each person please.

Normally it's around 10US$pppd - but of course depending on the group size it's going over the top then.
But the 10US$ might give you a kind of guideline and based on that and also on the service you receive you can come to your own conclusion.
Also depending whether the group consists of pupils makes a difference.
Just give some more infos on group size and age....

In addition to your guide, I would say around $5 per person per day as a pooled tip for your lodge/camp staff. But I don't know what's already covered or not covered by your tour. Did they give you any suggestions? Also don't know if you'll have a tour director.

Thanks spassvogel and Patty. Apparently it is all adults with 6-7 in a vehicle. The company recommended $8-10 per day per person but they did not say who gets what. I am assuming there is a tour director but now I have to verify this.

5 x 6/7 makes 30/35US$ per day sounds reasonable - unless it's the owner.
Always think in local terms/average salaries (accountant, clerk) in Nairobi e.g..
In Kenya this is between 80 and 100US$/months. That gives you an idea of the tip and which value that means to the locals.
Trowing around cash might be easy for you and your companions but will raise expectations on the local's side. Not a good thing at all.
Just keep it reasonably.
Again - happy travels!

PS
When we stayed at one camp in the Massai Mara for 12 days we handed out 200US$ to our guide - we had sole use of vehicle so that was only the 2 of us.
The guide went straight to the curio shop and got bead work belts for us. (done at the village where he lives)
So mour tipping policy wasn't wrong at all. And we still exchange text messages so that he is aware that we come and have requested him for guiding.
That's wouldn't be the case if we tip not sufficiently.
