When i was there a few weeks ago, the river was filled with carcasses and it was one of the worst smells of death I'd ever experienced. We were going to have a picnic on the bank of river but had to move it was so bad.

Any research study from past migrations as to approx death numbers of wildebeest crossing over?
I recall one year 30,000 or so died in crossings during heavy floods ... this was maybe 12-15 years ago IIRC, so this is nothing new.
Every year maybe 250,000 - 400,000 calves are born in the migrating herd that uses the south Serengeti. Every year another 250,000 - 400,000 die since the population seems stable at 1.3 - 1.7 million, limited by the amount of forage available, fluctuating largely due to weather.
That's life on the Serengeti ... no cause for alarm.
