It's really a shame there are so many safari cancellations. The economic hit is difficult, especially now. I'm cancelling my trip to Vancouver because it's too close to Texas.

I was honest in posting that I cancelled my trip but I do find some of the comments a little backhanded in not judging my decision. If you haven't cancelled your trip and are going without worry, good for you.

Each year I travel to some distant land with a friend with the blessing of my husband who stays home. He knows how much I enjoy my girlfriend trip. He never said anything when I told him we were renting cars in Turkey and exploring the countryside or driving along unmarked roads in the mountains in Costa Rica.

But when my husband voiced concern, along with my children and 92 year old Mom, I do feel I should take their feelings into consideration. That's what you do when you love your family and they love you.

Sure I had qualms about going to Africa and if I had no family, I would have gone. But I do have family and sometimes you have to put their feelings first.

rfbk50, I am in the exact same boat you. I am a married woman with a husband who doesn't care for overseas travel yet he never complains when I take my yearly trip abroad without him. I've always wanted to go on safari and he was all for it a few months ago. But after the events of the last few months he is now very nervous about any travel to Africa. This is the first time he has ever tried to talk me out of taking a trip.

Personally I am not afraid of getting ebola by traveling to Southern Africa, but I really hate the stress it is causing my husband. Like you I am thinking that next year this ebola situation will be under control and I can go on safari without upsetting my family so much.

I haven't decided what to do yet but for what it's worth I do understand your position.

I certainly understand wishing your family to not worry. However, I am sorry you felt you needed to cancel your trip.

sandi, I have been trying to stay off the Africa board until I build up my miles and money, and just saw your post. You are en route or in TZ already. Have a fab time! I hope you give us an update and share some photos when you return.

We are leaving for Nairobi tomorrow for 3 weeks in the Rift Valley, Mara, Amboseli, Zanzibar and Pemba Island.

Everyone has their own comfort level regarding dangers encountered while traveling. Speaking for myself, I feel fine about traveling in Kenya and Tanzania, nearly 3000 miles from the countries where there is an Ebola virus outbreak. I might feel differently if the disease were spreading eastward over time, but I don't see anything like that happening.
