Temperatures in the Selous

We are off to the Selous Safari camp at the end of August. What will the temperature be like at night and in the early morning? Will we be warm enough in light trouser & shirts or do we need to take fleeces/warmer clothes etc.? any guidance will be appreciated.

The temperature will be very warm and humid near water. There are tsetse flies in Selous, so I recommend long sleeved shirts and pants. Non blue or black. I wear long sleeved shirts 100% of the time on safari anyway, as I try to avoid sun burns. I wear lightweight, breathable shirts that are worn by flyfishermen or salt water fishermen.

It's winter, definitely need warm over clothing. The trousers and shirts are fine, but consider adding a thermal-t, a windbreaker or heavy crewneck or cardigan sweaters. Don't forget the socks; gloves, scarf and knit hat which are small enough additions, don't add weight and provide warmth.

Would you take hat, gloves and scarf to the Serengeti/Maasai Mara in September?

I was in Selous in August 2004.

I remember it was warm in the afternoon – we went swimming every day.

I don't remember it being cold in the evenings or morning. I had no fleece. In photos I am wearing a short sleeve shirt at dinner. Maybe that was unusual?

Anyway, I DO remember the mosquitos! Bring insect repellant!

Hello Patty,

These figures are for Dar, which is very close (temperature-wise) to the Selous - if anything, the Selous will be warmer.

Average Min: 24C / 76F

Average Max: 31C / 88F

Humidity will be very high, so factor that in as well -- high humidity can add several degrees to the temperature.

Cheers,
Julian

Patty -

From late-November thru March is summer, so you can expect the temps to be warm to hot... and, of course, humidity

August through Decemeber will be warmer months, that's for sure. Not as cold as you might think in the mornings. Expect hot and humid to be the standard. June and July are a little cooler, but not outright cold. September and October are my favorite months down at Selous.
