Taxi Fare from Giza to Cairo
Hi,
Our tour will be staying overnight in the Zoser Hotel in Giza. We would also like to spend time by ourselves in Cairo. About how much would a taxi cost us to get to the center of Cairo?
Thanks,
Fred

I would have said something like 20 Egyptian Pounds. I didn't quite do your exact journey which is why that's an estimate.
If I were you, I would ask at the hotel what the cost should be and then hail a taxi in the street. I was told that it's important to know the rough fare before getting into a taxi to avoid any potentially tricky situations. As a tourist, you are probably best agreeing the fare before getting in the taxi even though this is not what the Egyptians generally do as they tend to know what the fare is.
An alternative would be to get a taxi to Giza metro station which then takes you straight to the centre of Cairo but given how inexpensive taxis are you may think this is not worth the extra hassle.

It should cost you LE 20 to LE 25; given the fact that you will be considered a "rich tourist" and that LE 1 is worth about USD .22, I would go ahead and spring for the extra LE 5 just to make everybody happy. And DEFINITELY agree on the price beforehand. The locals don't have to do this, but they're also going to pay half the price. That's just the way it is!

By the way, you can hire a taxi for the entire day for roughly LE 20 per hour. It's very nice to come out of a mosque or museum (or wherever you're going) and have your own taxi waiting to take you to the next location.

Whatever fare you agree upon, it is very likely the fare will be stated as greater when you exit the taxi than when you get in - part of the charm of Egypt. Just smile and pay what you agreed upon plus a reasonable tip.

In March 2004, we paid 25EP to go from Giza to the Khan al Khalili bazaar in Cairo. Got the taxi ourselves across from our hotel in Giza - he initially wanted 60EP, but we got him down to 25 and gave him 5 additional pounds as a tip. The trip took close to 45 minutes due to traffic so we thought this was a great deal (approx $6 Canadian)!
