JNG,
I'm glad you asked this, as I am also wondering the same thing.
(We will be in Kenya and Tanzania, but were given the same price for sundowners).
It seems that any extras are really overpriced.
I was told that non-alcoholic beverages are $5US! $5 seems crazy to me for a bottle of water or a soda!
Is it just me???
And I know there will be those that say, "What's the big deal when you've plunked down thousands of dollars already for the safari?", but to me that is exactly the point.
You just feel like you're being taken advantage of since you're out in the bush without any other options.
Sorry, JNG, didn't mean to take over your post.
I'm done ranting now

frankly: that's absurd!
i pay a hunge amount to get to africa plus the camp nights.
but i am not willingly paying 45$ for a drink for sundowner.
a friend of mine just asked for the coolbox and took her gin with her and just ordered the tonic water.
you are doing the evening drive anyway. so it's not a big deal for the guide to pack a coolbox according to your wishes. skip the bites as one eats too much on safari anyway.
you should do fine with that.

Just buy your own drink at the bar and walk to the top of the mbuzi mawe rock (right by the camp). It's the very same sunset!
Definitely don't pay for your sundowner in advance... because there's always the chance you will book a sundowner for a certain night... only to find out that sky is cloudy that night and you've wasted your money.
