sun block and insect repellant

This may seem like a very dumb question, but if you are applying a sun block lotion and using Off wipes, which one would you apply first?

Last month our travel doctor told us to apply the sunblock first, in the shade, and let it completely dry (he said it takes about 30 minutes to dry) then apply the insect repellant. He also said the premixed products are not recommended.

I was told to put the insect protection on first, wait 15 minutes and apply the sunscreen. The repellant can reduce the effectiveness of the sunscreen as much an one-third, so you have to reapply the sunscreen more frequently to prevent sunburning.

Check the CDC for their recommendation.

I had the same question myself, but it didn't usually end up being a conflict, since I was using the repellant at twilight, and the sunblock in the sun.

So you don't need to apply insect repellent at all during the day?

It depends on your location, and the time of year, etc.

I just got back from Phinda and the SSGR, and I didn't use insect repellent. At Phinda Vlei (but not Rock), I got a couple of mosquito bites on my face, but they were all while I slept. No way was I putting that toxic stuff on my face while I slept.

I went to wwwn.CDC.gov >Travelers’ Health >Mosquito & Tick Protection

Here is what they recommend (third bullet down):

• When using sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and then repellent. Repellent should be washed off at the end of the day before going to bed.

Also note that daytime biters include mosquitoes that transmit dengue and sand flies that transmit leishmaniasis

In the UK, Boots (the chemist) sell a combined sun tan lotion and insect repellant. I would be surprised if this was not available elsewhere!

Problem is that you shouldn't apply insect repellent as often or as liberally as sunscreen.

Thanks for all your input. I did put in a call to our local immunization and travel clinic and their advice - based on our travel destinations (Kenya/Tan)
in a couple of weeks, is sun block first, let dry, then insect repellant.
