Storing Luggage at Johannesburg Airport

Is it possible to store luggage at the Johannesburg airport? I will be travelling with backpacks and am not sure if I can carry them on to the charter flights to the safari camps due to the size and weight. Is there a place I can store the bag if I cant bring it onto the plane? I hear there is a lot of theft at the airport and I dont have one of those backpacks you can lock. thanks

There is a place to get your backpack shrink-wrapped before checking it in at the storage facility. At least you would know if it was broken into when you returned.

Yes there is a luggage storage area in the basement; it is a room with wire cages..you do not lock up your own stuff but give it over to them and receive a ticket..the prices are about 42 Rand per day per piece if I remember correctly.

We left a few bags there for about a week, after having them wrapped in the machine on the departure floor...had no trouble. The airport is quite hectic at times so be prepared!

I wrote in more details about this and you can find the information if you do a search for JBG luggage storage or similar terms..

We were a group that travelled from J'burg to Victoria Falls in Nov. We checked about 40 bags at the airport (no shrink wrap)and everything was there when we returned 4 days later.
