I've stayed at the Tembo. It's a "tourist class" hotel in a terrific location. Has a pool. Is it the best hotel I've ever stayed in? No, but it's atmospheric.
I know the Clove has its fans, too, but Stone Town is hot. Does the Clove have a pool?

Hi Beecher,
Both hotels look lovely.

The Clove hotel is $ 50 for a double and the Tembo Hotel is $ 105. Do you “need” A/C?

I didn't see the Clove while I was there, but the website makes the rooms look much more attractive than the ones at Tembo (I know that looks can be deceiving, especially on the internet). Our bathroom at Tembo was particularly unpleasant with a strong urine smell. If I was going back, I would give the Clove a try; I like that it is smaller.

The Clove has 8 rooms and the Tembo is a favourite with tour groups. The Tembo has direct access to the beach and the Clove has a sea views from the rooftop terrace. I like the look of the rooms at the Tembo, but Carrie says the bathrooms have a strong urine smell. The Clove is half the price of the Tembo.
I’d choose Florida Guest House.
