Stay in Meknes or Fes

Hello - we're planing a trip to Morocco next Spring and wil be spending 3 or 4 days in the Meknes/Fes area. I had thought that we'd probably base ourselves in Fes, but I'm wondering if this is a good idea. A few guidebooks suggesting staying in Meknes and making day trips to Fes, Volubilis etc. They seem to be suggesting that maybe Meknes is more relaxed than Fes and makes a better base. Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

Alan

Meknes is more relaxed than Fes, but also much less interesting. Fes, for all its hassles, remains one of the most fascinating cities in the Islamic world. You could spend days just wandering the medina and allow your senses to take everything in. Either city is fairly handy for day trips, though of course if you are in Meknes you have Volubilis and Moulay Idriss right there.

Can I do a daytrip to Meknes from Fez, as I don't want to move between hotels?

Meknes is a very easy day-trip from Fes - you can take the train (45 mins) or taxi. In fact, many people combine Meknes and Volubilis in one day (and find that one afternoon is sufficient for Meknes). Beyond sebti's point about Fes being much more interesting (which I totally agree), Fes also has a much better selection of accommodation.
