Hi Aby,
There was no wi-fi at The Samburu Simba in July 2010. They had a computer, but the modem had not been hooked up.
You may want to unlock your cellphone and buy a sim card with top off cards in Nairobi before you travel to the gameparks. IMPORTANT--Be sure to put in the code for the reduced long distance rate which saves you significantly. Call customer service for the code.
The Samburu Simba Lodge is quite comfortable and the service is superb. Everyone at the lodge could not do enough for us.
We stayed at the Serena in The Mara--they had wi-fi, but the signal was very weak. Barely enough to send e-mails.

Thanks for the info.
Max - phones can be unlocked, and than accept any local SIM
i don't know about iPhone, but i've unlocked a Nokia using instructions i got on the web. (search "unlock iPhone...)
another solution is to buy an unlocked cell phone, e.g. i recently bought such a phone for $30 incl international shipping from Hong Kong on eBay (Nokia 6100 triband) for using on my trips
to talk using local SIM cards you need to pay the locals, so here comes a paycard with a code to put in

i have no time in Nairobi, leaving right away, but i understand i can use my TZ SIM as long as i still have some money credit.
Anyhow, a friend told me, it is now a long procedure in Kenya to buy a SIM: you need registration with your passport etc'
(Maybe arrange with the guide to buy you a SIM which you will leave with him upon returning)

Hi, Tigerphotog, was at the serena recently, and wi-fi is chargeable and expensive, it's about 300 shillings an hour. I would advise that you request your ground operator to buy you a safari com usb which is pretty cheap around 10-15 $ and buy internet access charges to download less than 1 GB, which should not be more than 10-20 dollars.
Are you staying only at the serena or are travelling to other places. Also the latest news, before I left was that Zain charges were reduced to 3 shillings a minute for calls to india and the united states.......buy a zain, will be cheaper.
