"As for game viewing, we have zero experience with this and know it can be hit or miss anywhere"
i cannot even imagine what is a a "miss" ...
come open-minded, on any x you expected you shall see y z & omega which you can never expect ...
if you sum up your journey when summing-up is proper, that is at the end of the safari things may look different. At a site you may have not seen any cats (but saw them elsewhere)you simply realize that you may have had an awesome life-time experience no one else on this board (or anywhere) can EXPECT...
Safari is not what people report, it is more like life, made of small details that create hapiness, far above "ticking" a cheetah or an elephant... or the stupid & superficial concept of "big five"

One cannot "miss" a safari - maybe unless one "mis-tunes" one's consciousness

Aby, I think you are exactly right. We are very open-minded and just excited to be doing this. After all, neither of us has been to Africa, nor have we really spent much time seeing wildlife in their natural habitats (unless you count the gators in South Florida that pop up once and awhile).
The whole adventure - going to Botswana, flying in a light plane, staying in the wild, etc. - is going to be so new for us I don't see how it can't be thrilling.
Thanks everyone for your advice. I'm ready to skip the wedding and go straight to the honeymoon! (don't tell my fiancee that last part)
