hey safarinut,
doesnt sound like you need much help. that itinerary sounds great. one thing that i would suggest is cut some time at vic falls and take a trip down to makololo in hwange for a couple days. in january the game is very good there (we went this past jan) and the price is right. under 250pppn. u can check out my trip report form earlier this year. its a 50 min cessna ride from vic falls airport or ive heard you can even get a road transfer thru the park if you wish. i think its about a 3-4 hour drive.

Welcome back!

Regarding your itinerary, just a couple observations...

By arriving in Cape Town at 8PM, you will not be to your hotel until possibly 9:30PM. With only three nights, you are only allowing yourself two full days of Cape Town. Are you sure this is enough time to enjoy your stay?

Matetsi Water Lodge for four nights. Yes, it is a bargain, but in January I suspect that bugs will be at a premium while the falls will be at a minimum.

You know best about Kruger/SSGR, so I will not comment there.

If it is in your budget, I would suggest possibly only two nights in Victoria Falls and then go to Makalolo Plains in Hwange for three nights. Fellow Fodorite, Bigcountry, was just there this past February and said it measured up to any Botswanan camp other than Mombo, if I remember correctly.

You will see plenty of elephants, giraffes and buffalo in Matetsi but I believe the bush will be too thick to have many successful predator sightings.
You will, however, surely appreciate your private plunge pool in the January heat. It is nicely setback just about 50 meters from the Zambezi River.

However, if your goal is Victoria Falls activities with whatever game sightings just a bonus, then Matetsi will work out well.

Good luck and good to see you back.

Thanks Rocco,I decided last year to put Africa on the backburner and enjoyed trips to LA,Santa Monica,Newport Beach(WOW!),London,PV(Mexico) and Albuquerque,NM.

I have been to CPT several times and my only purpose here on this trip will be to see a great white again.

My purpose at Matetsi is mainly for Canadian friends to see the Falls and seeing any game will be a bonus. Thanks for suggesting makololo,I could easily fit two nights in there.

Thanks for your advice,I will look into makololo.

Hi Kavey!

I was in London for a week in November of 2004 and realized a lifelong dream by watching the Springboks playing against England at Twickenham.I promise next time I come to London I will e-mail you, would love to have a cup of tea with you!

I haven't confirmed Mala Mala or Singita on my itinerary yet and was wondering whether to drop those two and visit Mombo instead?Mombo in January..What do you think?

Revised itinerary:

I am sure this is going to be my best safari ever!

1)4 nights Matetsi
2)3 nights Vumbura Plains
3)3 nights Mombo
4)3 nights Ratrays Mala Mala><
5)3 nights Singita Boulders/Londolozi Tree(leopard specialist safari)

I HAVE to go to Mombo and will appreciate thoughts on Duba Plains vs Vumbura Plains.

I know January isn't the best month in Botswana but I can't afford to go to Southern Africa again and miss out on Botswana.

Given that this is your first time in Botswana and Vumbura Plains is your only camp with water activities, I would keep it and leave Duba Plains for another trip. Visiting the Delta without experiencing a mokoro ride or boating would be a shame.

It looks like you're going for top-of-the-line luxury, in which case Vumbura Plains may fit better than Little Vumbura. However, if you're not a fan of 'safari moderne' decor, you may want to consider Little Vumbura instead. I visited Vumbura Plains when I was in Botswana in June 2005, and found the design rather jarring -- instead of blending into and complementing the landscape, it's very in-your-face and a bit OTT. It's certainly posh, but if I wanted cutting-edge design I'd go to Italy, not to Botswana.
