Safari Sounds

Hi everyone,
The idea of a voice recording device sounds like a really good idea for capturing the memory of a safari. What makes/models/prices have people used?

I hope to take one of these with me to Tanzania next year. The one recommended to me was the Panasonic Digital IC Voice Recorder RR 430 Silver, but I've only just starting my investigation of these little devices.

Here's a link to a couple of previous discussions on the topic: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34936890

The Canon S3 and probably other camera have a setting for sound only recording. It takes up a lot less memory then video with sound and you don't have to carry around a second piece of equipment. May want to check your camera.

I have an Edirol R-09 and absolutely love it. It has great built-in stereo mics, but I also use a shotgun microphone if I have the time to set it up. Highly recommended. You can record to an SD memory card, and can record in uncompressed WAV format, and many different compression levels of mp3.

Woah, I just checked the price of the Edirol R-09, Andy. It's prohibitive for me. Can you suggest some other options for us to look into?

Would a basic dictation type of voice recorder work?

I used a Canon S2 while on safari and took a video of a leopard marking his territory. The leopard's roar (like a saw on wood) came through loud and clear.
HTH!
