Afternoon Fodorites

I have been researching a safari to Africa for some. Every time I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do another option comes to mind. I suppose it is a wonderful problem to have but there is just so much to see and do in Southern Africa!

Hopefully yall can help me narrow it down, or more likely offer even more possibilities. Either would be great.

We're looking at 13-15 nights in Africa for our honeymoon. We'll be traveling mid May 2008.

I have been looking at the South Luangwa National Park for 5-8 days. But have recently begun researching Bots and was also thinking of the Linyanti/Okavango area.

Then of course there is the Sabi Sands area and Cape Town.

I cant do all of this I know. Are some areas better in May than other?

Our budget is app 10000 USD exc. international airfare.

I was thinking of 6 nts in South Luangwa, 1 nt Vic Falls, 3 nts Linyanti, and 3 nts Okavango. My only concern is that this may be too much traveling for a honeymoon.

Well, not for me, but then again, it has been a long time since I've had a honeymoon. So maybe it would be . How much traveling is good on a honeymoon, anyone????

One of my close friends went to Capetown for her honeymoon and loved it. I think Capetown (a few nights in the city and a few nights in the winelands), combined with Sabi Sands, would be ideal. Personally, I would not want to be in the bush for my entire honeymoon.

There have been some Cape Town and South Africa safari honeymoon threads, so that is a nice combination.

I like your original plan too. You may want to check into walking opportunities in mid May. If the grass is too high there is no walking. (I'm assuming you wanted to do walking.) With 6 days you could do walking from remote bush camp to bush camp or pick two camps and do walking from them (if walking is allowed of course.) To give you an idea of pricing for the camp to camp walking safaris, here are a few links. I’ve used Robin Pope and Remote Africa camps (all great) and will use Norman Carr on an upcoming trip. I’ve never done walking from camp to camp though, in Zambia.

Linyanti-Okavango is a good combo in Botswana. Camps there are easily $600 per night per person in May and can be much more. Check www.e-gnu.com for approximate rates.

As for potentially too much traveling, actually it seems about right. You could do two 3-night stays in S. Luangwa rather than walking from camp to camp to reduce the moving. In Botswana you would fly, probably mid-day, from one camp to another on a flight that would likely be no longer than an hour or so.
