ruben,
we were driven up to madikwe as we didn't want to leave the car at the entrance for almost 2 weeks. private vehicles are not allowed within the reserve for games drives etc. the roads were very good - a big percentage tarred - and well sign posted.
you should also find a map on the website i have already posted.

Yes, the roads are safe and quite fast. It's a toll road as far as Zeerust, with ample service stations along the way for fuel and food.
You can bring your car to the lodge; depending on the lodge the access roads inside Madikwe will run the gamut from okay to pretty rough, but go slow and you won't have any difficulty. Be sure you know which entrance to the reserve you need to take - there are several and you can't easily traverse the reserve to get to where you ought to be.

In December 2006, we stayed at the Bush House (a great place, by the way!) in Madikwe and self-drove in a rented vehicle from the Jo'burg airport. We had no problem, but the Bush House gave us very specific directions to follow, from where to stop to refuel to where to have lunch. I would ask your lodge/camp for advice before making the trip. hi there,
the roads are fine, I live in Johannesburg and drive there at least 4 times a year from here. Dependiing upon how fast you drive it will take some 3,5 to 4 hours. Zeerust is well signposted and from there you travel towards Gaberone. Be carefull not to miss the right hand turn coming out of Zeerust. This is on a cross roads (four way stop) which is still in the bulit up area and is very easy to miss.
have a great trip
