Watched today's Oprah about the "Invisible Children" and/or "Nightwalkers" in Uganda and the crisis in Darfur.

If anyone had or has a chance to watch it or tivo-ed it, I highly recommend watching it.

Pretty intense stuff.

There is a movement this Saturday, 4/29 in 130 cities across the country to acknowledge the crisis in northern Uganda and hopefully get the government to act.

Wish them luck!

Yeah, Sandy - Call me crazy, but I plant to be out there, sleeping in downtown Lincoln for the Global NIght Out. Several hundred from my town are supposed to be there. We shall see. (And if I don't make it don't hold it against me. My weekend plans have been changing by the nanosecond...)

Sharon-
Good for you for doing that!
I've got guests in this weekend, otherwise I'd find out where in ATL it's going on and probably do the same thing. Hmmm...if only I could convince them to participate!
It's gonna be tough enough being pulled away from Fodor's for a couple of days...I'll have to sneak in my fixes one way or another! Oops...there's that darn addiction talking!

Just watched Oprah, what a heartbreaking show. On our flight from Lusaka to London there were 50 Congolese refugees, mostly children, going to relocate to the U.K. Not a day goes by that I don't think of the young girl across from me that I gave chocolates, peanuts and sodas to throughout the flight. What those children must have witnessed and gone through, though still had smiles for the man across the aisle.

Hi! Got my order of "In My county" from Amazon yesterday. Watched it last night. Loved it!!! Samuel Jackson was fantastic!!!

Loved the part in the movie......where the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and they find a b&b, the owner of the b&b allows them to stay the night on thinking that Samuel's character knows Oprah personally.

But really kept me on the edge of my seat.......

Just finished watching the movie
"Beat the Drum"
which was released in '03.

A touching film about a 9-year old orphaned S.A. boy from Kwazulu-Natal who goes to Jo'burg in search of his uncle. And in search of understanding the mysterious illness (AIDS) that is killing his relatives in his village back home.

www.beatthedrum.net

Definitely worth a look.

The Power of One
it’s based on the book by Bryce Courtenay – it came out in 1992…so it’s not exactly new. The books are pretty good too..

Saw a wonderful little movie last night..."The Wooden Camera"...set in Capetown and a nearby township. It's about two boys who find a man's body and steal his belongings: one boy takes the man's gun, the other takes his video camera.

Hari,

Made in 2003...a joint French-UK-South African production. Saw it on cable last night...'world movies' channel, which in Oz usually means 'foreign' other than US and UK.

Bay Area Fodorites:

I'm seeing God Grew Tired of Us in San Francisco this week. It's playing a limited-run at Opera Plaza, ends Thursday, I believe.

Looks pretty good but I'll provide my in-depth review later. (Kidding.)

Hari, Beat the Drum looks like something I want to see, but I haven't seen it playing in my area. Perhaps it came and went already?

Another recent movie (May 2005 anyway) -is "Red Dust" with Hilary Swank and Chiwetel Ejiofor, about the Truth and Reconcilliation commision in SA. It was interesting too - although a few reviews said it was overly earnest and not Hilary's best work - us girls found it interesting and an eye opener.

We had a screening of "God Grew Tired of Us" last night and John Dau answered questions from the audience after. It's a wonderful documentary about the Lost Boys of Sudan-check out their website, www.godgrewtiredofus.com to see when it will be playing in your area. John Dau is raising money for a clinic he is building in southern Sudan-links are on website.
