PredatorBiologist, a timely story for you

Bill, on the other thread the subject of names for your new baby came up. Something happened at lunch today that I have to tell you.

My parents gave my sister a 4 or 5' tall giraffe when she was about 16 years old (she's 46 now). She kept the giraffe for a very long time and finally gave it to a niece a couple of years ago. Now the niece is ready for it to move on. My brother asked my dad if he would like to have the giraffe for an 8 yr old, Corie, that lives with them and Dad said yes and he took the giraffe home yesterday.

This morning my dad went in to wake up Corie and there was a huge lump in her bed. He asked her what in the world it was and she threw back the covers and it was that giraffe! She loves it. Corie asked my dad what the giraffe's name was and he said it had never been named so she might as well call it Ralphie. She asked, why Ralphie? He said, you know,ralph/gi-raffe sounds the same.

It cracked me up and I immediately thought of you trying to come up with a name

Too funny! I once had a little stuffed toy lion that I also named "Ralph" because it sounded like a lion cub's call to me. Okay, Bill, "Ralph" it is!

Funny Sundowner! I'll add Ralph to the selection list that I will review over some Amarula this week. Leo has a big cheetah that is at least 3 feet tall. On safari I found out from a German couple that my grandfather who was born there had a last name that could be considered a derivative of cheetah in German, Gepard is the German word and our name was Gebhardt so we call him Gebby after my grandfather.

Unborn baby just received a wonderful stuffed rhino last weekend from a friend so our safari collection is growing nicely.

Ashley surprised a porcupine walking to her tent one night at Mashatu and it really scared her. Last week Katie and I went to the hospital gift shop to buy something for her new baby and what did we find but a porcupine. What are the chances of the hospital gift shop having a porcupine stuffed animal. Of course, we bought it.

What a great story! You don't want to know how many stuffed animals from Africa we have in our house for my two young boys. You just don't want to know.

Thanks Carla for both congrats.

We did go with Max, with the connection to the Where the Wild Things Are as the natural world theme. Also, with 6 letters total for both boys names I'm instilling a conservation ethic from the beginning
