I have an old FujiFinePix that I still like for the ability to attach a wide angle lense, although its only 6x optical zoom and only 3.2 megapixels. It's now my backup. It uses AA batteries.

I love my newer Sony H-9 for the 15x optical zoom. It has 8 megapixels. Advantages: good viewfinder, simple to use, several automatic settings, image stabilization, great burst mode, and great zoom. Disadvantageous: doesn't use AA batteries, has alot of bells and whistles I don't use (that I'm sure I paid for).

We just returned from Kenya/Tanzania. We took a Panasonic FZ30 and a TZ3. The TZ3 took some good pictures but some were soft, not quite in focus. My FZ30 took great pictures. We went to Egypt in Feb. 2006 and took the FZ30. I really liked the pictures it took there. I enjoyed being able to zoom (12X) in on things at the top of the temples. The nice thing about the FZ30 (now the FZ50) is that the when you zoom the lens doesn't go in and out. I feel this protects it from the dust which is handy in Egypt in a sandstorm or in Africa with all the dust from the roads. Also when you turn on the camera it is ready to go, you don't have to wait for the lens to come out. This feature does make the camera a little larger than others. You really need to go into a store and handle all the cameras to make a decision.
