We always take some bubble wrap, string, duct tape, and a marking pen. It's handy for wrapping breakable souvenirs. We once bought (from Magellan, I think) a sort of straps-and-handle affair that you can put around a box, making the box into luggage. We've used it every time we've traveled to Africa, and on most Europe trips too. It can turn any box into something you can easily carry on the plane.

I also always take a light weight fabric suitcase, rolled or folded up inside a suitcase on the way over. On the way back I always have more stuff than I came with, and I use that case to bring it all home in. Going over we don't want to take more than one checked bag and one carryon each, but on the way home somehow it doesn't seem like such a hassle to have one extra checked bag.
