one day in Nairobi

I actually have two full days in Nairobi before my tour group begins......Included in my tour are Giraffe Sanctuary and the Karen Blixen Museum, so i would like some suggestions for my days on my own.....i imagine that i will sleep away the first day and i would like to go to the Sheldrick Elehant orphanage on day two.... who is Kenneday? How can i get in touch with him? If he is not available , will my hotel (The Nairobi Serena) be able to get a guide for me? I would love to get a "cheetah hug" as well.....thanks

Kennedy is a wonderful guide that many of us on this board have used for our days before or after our safari in Nairobi. His company is Waymark Safaris, and you can contact him at:
Kennedy (Waymark Safaris)
E-mail Address(es):
[email protected]

He is a very enthusiastic person and a great guide. One of his specialties is arranging for the cheetah hug at KWS Animal Orphanage at Nairobi National Park. Just let him know what you are already booked to see, and what you do want to see, and he will suggest an itinerary for you for the day.

Which tour group are you going with and where are you going if I may ask? Those of us left at home here that are not going are always anxious to read about others itineraries!

Hey, I'd be happy to go with you to Sheldrick and to the Cheetah hug. I can organise a taxi to take to both. If you want to get in touch with me ask Mark Gathuri the GM at the Serena to give me a call. I love going to the Sheldrick Centre... only if you can't get your own guide... but this can be expensive way of doing it. PM me or email [email protected]

Thanks for the info on Kenneday.........Here is my info that you asked about.......I book most of my trips through Elderhostel.......It is an organization for travelers who are 55 and older...It is also very educationally based.......In addition to game drives and field trips, there are lectures by professional in each area of study......For examble, in Ambeseli Park , we will be concentrating on Elephants and the game drives will be targeting elephants specifically.......We will be spending one day in Nairobi then on to Ambeseli, Lake Nakaru, Sweetwaters and Masai Mara.....in addtion to the game drives, we will also be visiting Giraffe Manor, Karen Blixen Museum, a Rhino Sanctuary, a Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a Masai village etc........The Elderhostel organization is the overseer for the trip, but they contract out to a local Kenyan group for the day-to day management, guides etc. I'm excited, but nervous so i am taking all kinds of "funnels" and other remedies for all kinds of aches and pains........I know i sound a bit wimpy, but i live in Manhattan and for us New Yorkers, "the wilderness" is the space between the doorman and the taxicab.....

Can anyone let me know how long response time usely is from Kennedy. I have sent an email to him regarding his services for a day trip and I haven't heard back. I don't know if I'm too anxious..... It's been over a week.

psupam,
He may be away with clients, but normally Kennedy answers emails in a very timely fashion. I'd send him another just in case it somehow got lost in the shuffle.

I highly recommend Kennedy. We did a day trip with him at the end of our safari and he was wonderful!! We did the cheetah hug and he took us to an authentic Kenyan dinner, away from the tourist spots. He then took us to a Kenyan shopping mall where we loaded up on bargains before our long flight back to California.
Kennedy always got back to us within 48 hours at the longest.
if you would like to see my pictures from kenya, including the cheetah hug, go to costco.com, click on the photocenter button at top, then log me in on the right.

Lynda,

I got in touch with Kennedy and he said that you had also sent an email concerning me. Thanks so much. I fat fingered his address the first time and the email never got there.

We are setting up for safari in September in Kenya.

Once again, thanks.

Hi All...It now appears that we will be flying into Nairobi one day earlier (26 Aug.)than planned and have been offered the following tours:
1.Giraffe Center & Karen Blixens'
2.City tour/childrens orphanage
3.Elephant orphanage/Nairobi N.Park
4.Carnivore lunch/dinner
Would appreciate your comments/suggestions as to what you would suggest we try doing. I have heard that the restaurant is not as good as it once was. Thanks, Bob

I've really enjoyed my visits to the Sheldrick elephant orphanage. Do you know the name of the children's orphanage? Another poster visited an AIDS orphanage, Nyumbani, and posted about it here http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...4&tid=34935011

Are these set tours you have to choose from or can you select specific places based on your interests?

Patty...thanks for your comments. I have gone back to our tour company and asked those questions. Another thought I had was to just go ahead and try and get in touch with "Kenneday" and have him set up an itinerary for us...any thoughts on that?

See what your tour company says. If you're not satisfied with their response, I'd contact Kennedy. I haven't used him before but he has lots of happy clients here. In any case, you should be able to tailor the day to your interests.
