Here's my long-winded way of saying that you need to decide:
Why were you fearful in CR--that is, are you normally a nervous traveler or was there a specific fear (perhaps the Bank Robbery in La Fortuna)?
We were in CR in Dec./Jan. and couldn't have felt safer there so I get the feeling you might have a tendancy toward worry.
Figure out whether this reaction to the warning is normal for you or if it is your "danger" antennae going up. If the former, then you know how to deal with the fear and by all means, continue on your trip, you'll relax a bit once you are there. If it is the latter, however, think carefully about whether you can really enjoy a trip if you are "on edge" the whole time, regardless of whether anything happens.
