Nairobi Start!

Hey folks,
My husband and I are planning a trip through Southern Africa and we are planning to start in Nairobi. We have about three weeks to spend travelling. We would like to camp, but we aren't sure if we should do a self drive or go with a company... any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks

If you are unsure then I would suggest going with an overland operator, many have trips heading south that will pick you up in NBO, just do the research to to find one that suites your travel style.

Was in Kenya this past fall and spent considerable time in Nairobi. I travel a lot, and by myself too, so am not timid, but would not suggest to anyone to travel alone in the Nairobi area. Though the government denies it (especially during tourist season), the Mungiki are very active there and in Kadjiado and I'd suggest having a guide who knows the languages and the politics and what's going on in any particular week.
When I was there, I found MaraWays Tours to be particularly helpful and at a cost that wasn't completely outrageous.
Enjoy your trip, you lucky folks!!

Nairobi is nowhere near southern Africa. Could you explain a bit more what you have in mind? If you arrive in Nairobi, then Kenya and Tanzania (East Africa) would be your best bets. There are lots of outfitters at all price points. What sort of budget do you have? That's where you start.

Don't recall all their locations, but know Kenya and Tanzania were on the itinerary as a self-drive. So look for threads by "canadian_robin" for her reports. This should give you some ideas.

Agree with Shaytay that you start with a budget, also a general time of year you plan to travel. Also, what are your goals? To cover lots of ground? See the maximum amount of wildlife? Focus on culture? See certain species? Any places that are must-sees for you?

My first Africa trip was 3 weeks, all spent in just Tanzania and Kenya, and there was still a lot I did not see there. Still have more places in those two countries I'd like to visit.

I Think Nairobi is very safe and peaceful city to visit. You do not need to worry about these kind of things . There are so many beautiful places to visit . the traditional foods in Nairobi are very famous in tourists . There are so many safari parks in Nairobi. if you are planning to visit Nairobi then you need to check for the cheap flights to Nairobi or simply visit the relevant website. hope you will enjoy the trip
