Queen Latifah would be perfect. Thumbs down on Oprah. Or ____ Taylor (can't recall first name) who when thinner was in Fly Away (TV series), recently wife of Dennis Haysbert (sp) on the Unit... she's got hips. Morgan is good, but too old; Haysbert would work, along with Denzel (either would for me anyday they chose to put their shoes under my bed... seriously; I'm so bad, bad ) Ms. Makutsi had the blue shoes with green lining.

Yeh, rizzoto - this should really be a TV mini-series; too many stories that I'm sure would be chopped up in a 2/hr movie.

Oh, how I smile recalling these characters.

Think they need any extras? I work for less than scale.

I love the series and was wondering when someone would get around to trying and make it into film.

I hope they take great care in the screenplay and casting. I would vote for using unknowns. I think the characters are so hugely the story (and I don't just mean in the "traditionaly built" sense) and using any "known" actors (male or female) would be a distraction. I've got to believe good choices could be found in Botswana itself.

Interesting that all of the suggestions for actors in the movie be American. My vote is for a Botswanan cast.

Calo,

I was just going to say the same thing!

I just finished "Blood Diamond" the other night. They couldn't find a South African to play Leonardo's part?!?! Of course, I know they wanted to put him in there to gain a big audience.

Hollywood most often is in business to make money, though one wonders with some stuff they produce. No doubt there are excellent African actors that can fill any of the roles in this story, but it's "a name" that gets the audience and makes the money. Leonardo did that for Blood Diamond.

We're simply having fun, playing with our ideas because we'd love to see the story on film. Won't know much till....

So much for our great ideas. From the announcement:

"US R&B diva Jill Scott has been selected to play the lead role of Precious Mma Ramotswe in the movie."

Not familiar with Ms. Scott... just a guess, but she may be too young! Either they're too old or too young. What do we know??? It'll be fun to see how this all turns out.

I vote for local actors too. And if they can't be found in Botswana itself, South Africa has a thriving movie industry with plenty of good actors, directors, and technical people.

If they use western actors, I hope they have a really good vocal coach, because to me part of the charm of these books is hearing that lovely southern African English in my head as I read.

I can't wait to see it on the screen!

Oh -- I was posting at the time Sandi was writing.

Why do they want an R&B diva?

For sure, she doesn't have to sing in this role. Hey, it's Hollywood - fantasy world.

They're currently in Botswana and casting. Expect 1500 locals to find work with this production.

It would be a shame to use anyone who is not of African birth rather than Americans or Brits. I hope they choose to cast with Batswana or other individuals from Southern Africa.

And for those of you who haven't had the pleasure...I HIGHLY recommend listening to the series on CD/tape. Lisette Lecat who is the reader is wonderful, has the proper cadence and accents and really brings Precious and the other characters to life.

While we were in Botswana, it was mentioned a few times that the directors of the movie were currently there scouting locations and casting. A woman in our group is a movie director from New York and had talked to the movie director/producers while in Botswana. Apparently, they said that the role of Precious is going to an American, as the directors felt the Botswana accent was too much for American audiences to understand. This is all second hand, but if true, I think unfortunate. I would have liked the role to go to a Batswana woman.

the above article says it will be a t.v. series, not a movie, with a 90 minute pilot.

From the article above, Queen Latifah was one of the possible choices. And guess I was wrong when it comes to the age of Ms. Scott.

... and if a TV mini-series, I'd much prefer than a full-blown movie (as my comment above).

TV series? I hope they don't go on and on like "Friends"...... the delta would be completely turned inside out by then!

I'm not sure if it is a TV Series or Movie. IMDB is saying it will be directed by Anthony Minghella and written by Richard Curtis (from the Notting Hill/Bridget jones movies).

IMDB is also saying that Grace Makutsi is being played by Anika Noni Rose from Dreamgirls

I am not sure who Lucian Msamati is, but he is also credited as an actor, but it does not say which part.

Info all found
