Morocco in May

Me and my friend are spending two weeks in Morocco at the beginning of May. We will fly in and out of Marrakesh and would like any tips on an itinerary that can be done moderately easily by train (and possibly small amount or car + driver). We'd like to visit Fez and a good beach, the desert if possible and nightlife. We're both into culture as well the scenic side of travelling and willing to try most things. We're on a budget in terms of accommodation but would like to try some of the great food out there too. I know this is a tall order but we're just wondering what can be done confortable and enjoyably. Thanks for any pointers.

The train from Marrakesh to Fes is via Casablanca and thus a long journey. If you want village life Essaouira is a good beach destination. You won't be able to take the train all the way to the desert. But there are plenty of cheap travel options. Check out http://www.triotours.com and www.kidscantravel.com.

I would definitely recommend going to Fes. It was my favorite town in Morocco. Chefchaouen is in the mountains and 3.5 hrs by bus from Fes and also really nice, but a little boring. Essaouira is an awesome beach village, only 3 hrs from Marrakesh by bus so you should definitely visit. The beaches are not very nice in my opinion and I definitely do not recommend Agadir (awful). I remember at my hotel in Marrakesh inexpensive tours being offered to the desert for like 3 days but it is far from there.

if you want to see some pics of these places you can on my Morocco journal entry towards the bottom on the front page of my web site www.sarahandflo.com

have fun! and let me know if you have any questions

PS- the budget accomodation is really good in Marrakesh, not so good in Fes, and OK in Essouira. The food in Marrakesh on the square is AMAZING. nightlife is not so great anywhere since there is barely any alcohol being sold. bring some. but we did find two fun bars in Essouira.
