Meknes

Has anyone been to Meknes recently? I was there a couple of years ago and it seemed like many of the attractions were being restored and were inaccessible. Is this still the case?

I was there in October of 2024. Several museums were still closed for renovation at that time, but I found much to enjoy in Meknes, including the wonderful Dr Jamal Museum, the Mausoleum of Moulay Isma'il, a half day trip to Volubulis, and roaming the covered market at El Hadim Square.

Some are open and some not

I’ve actually been on a one week trip recently covering Meknes as part of the itinerary. The city is definitely worth visiting, but I would recommend having a local guide for around 2 hours to really bring it to life and explain the history. Most of the main monuments are open now, except for the granaries and Kara Prison, which are still under restoration.

I was in Meknes in November 2021. Meknes was okay, but I preferred Fez and Marrakesh.
