Maramboi, New Tarangire Camp
The folks at Kibo have sold the Tarangire Tented River Camp to Chimpanzee Safaris, who will supposedly operate it as before. Kibo is putting the finishing touches on a new camp in the area called Maramboi. It's supposed to open with 10 permanent tents on platforms this coming June and will have more in the future. The tents are supposed to be even bigger and better than the ones at TRC.
As to location, all I've gotten is that it's "on the other side of Tarangire Road and overlooks Lake Manyara." I've requested further info on the location and how far it is from the Tarangire NP gate. I hope to get pictures closer to their opening date.
Does anyone else have any further info on the camp? Are there any other camps that overlook Lake Manyara from the east side? Eben, have you been to the site or have GPS coordinates for it? If I get any from Kibo, I'll let you know.

I am planning to visit after the Karibu Trade Fair in early June!
I have an idea where it is but won't comment until I've seen what they have done! I don't have exact coordinates yet.
Lodge competition around Tarangire is heating up!

It certainly seems to be! I think that people are finally discovering a great park, Tarangire.
I'm working with Josiah at Kibo, putting together a group trip for June 2007, but want more info before I book into the camp. I'll be interested to see what you have to say about Maramboi after your visit.

ShayTay & ClimbHigh - How was the trip to Maramboi Tented camp? I too have emailed Joshia at Kibo he is very helpful.
I am scheduled to stay there a few nights in Sept 08, there is not much on the internet about this camp.
Any info will be appreciated.

This is an old thread! I've been to Maramboi a few times since 2006!
Tarangire is one of my favorite parks. About 2 months ago I was able to spend a week camping inside and I drove myself all over the park in a little 4WD Suzuki.
Being by myself (no guide), I was able to slow down and observe the wildlife in a really relaxed way from sunrise to sundown.
I found several lion prides and saw them hunt a large herd of buffalo twice! I saw cheetah hunting and even two female lions following the cheetahs hoping to steal the kills.
I noted the animal movements to/from the Tarangire River and the swamps and I became obsessed with the late sunsets at Silale - stunningly green in the evening glow with large elephant families rolling in the mud. I came to know a huge leapard near the picnic site - hiding during the day but out in full view early and late!
None of this would've been possible if I stayed outside the park.
Please look at the map here: http://www.go-safari.com/Tarangire/TarangireMap3.jpg
Silale swap is the green down at the bottom near Olivers. Can you guess the drive distances involved from the park gates and beyond?

This discussion is not about Olivers!
It is my policy to mark tented camps ONLY where I last saw them and not where they may move afterwards or during rainy months.
On Sep 15 2007 I spent a delightful day at Olivers at the exact location on my map! My map is accurate as things were on that date!
Should they move permanently for next high season I will locate them in early January when I return to East Africa after the Holidays here in the US.
Would you care to share it's exact current location with us?

Eben - Since you provided link to park map, I noticed location of Oliver's, so I showed a "smiley" with comment. Figured you had received or been made aware of the below from Asilia, dated November 22 -
"In the last few months, we have been working hard to find an all-weather site for Oliver’s Camp and we’re absolutely delighted to announce that the new all weather site for Oliver’s Camp inside the Tarangire National Park has been approved…. And we are moving!!
Like the previous site, the new site is in the southern part of the national park, away from the busier north. The big change is that we will have all weather access to this new site.
The camp will still have 8 large en-suite tents with a chemical toilet and safari shower.
We will close at the previous site on 20th November ’07 and then reopen at the new site on 25th November ’07."
They provided a map, but I can't figure out how to post here, but from the text
..."The new site is about a kilometer south of Minyonyo Pools, on an elevated ridge overlooking a flood plain."
Guess you'll see it in January!

Eben, can the park be accessed at the Boundary Hill gate?
If we watch a sunset at Silale, can we make our way out of the park (pronto) at the Boundary Hill gate? I've been to the park, but I'd like to know the drive time from Silale to the gate, please.

Yes, one can certainly get to Boundary Hill gate a lot quicker from Silale using the nice road along the swamp to the gate.
It is possible to enter at Boundary Hill if you have the paperwork and even if you have to pay park fees but I am unsure if they have a 100% relable card system at this gate (the new way of paying). It is on my agenda to check out in a couple of weeks as I hear different reports from the field.
