Kenya to Zanzibar

Hello
I am lucky enough to be going to Kenya for a year in January. This will be my 4th time in Kenya and is pretty much my dream come true! I am going to be working there on an internship but will have time for some travelling too. I want to explore some places around Kenya I haven't made it to yet, but am also thinking about Zanzibar. As far as I can tell from a quick google search there is a ferry from Mombasa.

I'm just looking for some general advice on Zanzibar I guess, how to get there, accomodation, the best places and anything else you can think of! Also, will I need a Tanzanian visa to get in?

I won't actually be getting paid (though only have to pay for flights and food) so my budget won't be huge. I have been saving like mad though and I'm accounting for extras such as this in the budget.

Thanks! x

I don't know about any ferry from Mombasa, but there are flights on Kenya Airways directly from Nairobi to Zanzibar. Yes, you'll need a Tanzania visa ($100 for US citizens and $50 for everyone else, I believe.) There are lots of places to stay, both in Stone Town and also on the beach, so I would imagine you could find something within your budget. You could also just hit the beach in Kenya, rather than going all the way to Zanzibar. By the time you pay for transportation and the visa, you could stay at a nice place on the beach in Kenya.

Besides the higher (USD$100) Tanzania visa cost, you will require a Yellow Fever Inoc with yellow book proof of same for entry to Tanzania/Zanzibar. YF inocs are expensive, about $125, but this lasts for 10/years.

Hi
Thanks for the replies so far! Good point about the Kenyan beaches, I have always had this desire to go to Zanzibar but obviously need to do a bit more research.

I have a yellow fever certificate.

Ferry stopped running years ago and hasn't restarted to my knowledge. Either fly or take the bus.
