How to dial US from Kenya & Tanzania?

Hi There - Can someone confirm how to make calls to the US from Kenya & Tanzania? I will not have a cell phone, but would like to touch base with my family along the way by either paying to use my guide's satellite phone or using hotel phones we may come across along the way while on safari...

I tried to google this, but not getting anywhere. What I saw is dial 000 (is that the country code for US??), then 1, then the area code, etc. Is this correct? Also, does it work the same way on satellite phones?

Sorry for the silly question - I feel so low tech...

The US country code is 1. When making international calls, the country code is preceded by the international dialing code from that country which for both Kenya and Tanzania is 000.

I don't know if satellite phones work the same way, but are you sure your guide will have a sat phone and not a cell phone? It's much more likely to be the latter.

While in Tz press:

+1 (you will find the + sign by pressing either the "star" or "pound&quot
then area code and telephone number.

Then we just did re-dials.

I didn't take a cell phone either but found that several of the lodges were set up to place a call for you. They charged about $5.00 per minute but it was well cheaper than renting a cell phone to work in that country. I only called back home once but I did ask the tour company that we were using and they happily e-mailed our family contact and said we could give their e-mail for emergency contact. That worked great for us as the tour company is in constant contact with the drivers/guides.
