Hello. You sound like you are British? Or am I completely wrong?
Regarding your questions, I am sure there are some Fodorites here who can answer your questions. I too am planning a first time safari with my daughter and I have spent a lot of time researching here.
There is a wealth of information to be found on all of the questions you ask. I would start with a search on each particular issue or question you have and see what these seasoned travellers have to offer in regards to any of the situations.
This website is wonderful for checking things and reading reviews.
Good luck.

Hello Sarahlouise,
Have a look at Lynda’s very comprehensive packing list. http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34802443
There’re big spiders, but you don’t see them that often and they aren’t a problem. Whitesands is a beach resort in Mombasa that’s probably more than good. Where are you going on safari?
xx

Hi sarahlouise
Have you already booked your safari?
if not give us your plan & you can get a lot of opinions/tips/remarks about it.
i've been to Whitesands a few times. what would you like to know specifically?
my best advice for you:
1. read from this INDEX of safari-reports
http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...9&start=50
2. search this board on any keyword you mentioned - in the box above
3. wander around this forum thrteads &read a bit the relevant threads

BTW there are big spiders on HUGE webs between trees (called palm-spiders)
no need to worry
IMO they are so interesting since they are found in groups...
they will not walk in your room though!
look at the picture to get a proportion

I was pleasantly surprised to find fewer bugs than I expected in Kenya. I guess I was a little bit afraid that it would be like a bad movie scene, but while the bugs were occasionally annoying, they weren't scary.
You do want to bring insect repellent, for the mosquitos, however.
