I nearly had a tusk in my head at Mombo. A bull elephant was concealed behind some large bushes right next to the road. The guide didn't know he was there and all of a sudden as we passed the bush the guide was surprised and gunned it -- I was in the top row and the ele's tusks were about a foot from my head, luckily he seemed shocked too and hesitated before seeing us off. I was just about eye to eye with the old boy.
I have a slide of a 3 year old male lion at Duba who walked by so close that I could have rubbed his little mane and I have had a couple of wild dogs that I could have petted right on the head.

Hello,
Branching out from big cats, I've also had close encounters with ellies, wild dogs, and there was also the big male baboon looking over my shoulder (seen in the mirror at Savuti). I've also had hyaena cubs chew the rubber seal on the door of my vehicle.
Personally, I found the baboon the scariest of all of my close encounters. I'll take a leopard any day.
Cheers,
Julian
