Have you been to Liberia?

I have a brother in law doing reseach in Liberia right now? How safe is he? What is the country like?

I thought your post was a joke at first. Liberia has been one of the most dangerous countries in the world to travel in for years now (though many of the Central Asian Republics are catching up). Although it has become relatively stable lately, there are still many reports of police terrorism/corruption, random violence, and unreliable resources. Read up on Liberia in the US State Dept warnings, etc.
Having spent time in West Africa, the two countries I would most avoid are Nigeria and Liberia.

I hate to bear bad news, but Liberia is one of the world's true hell-holes. I did research in Monrovia at the National Archives twenty years or so ago and have never recovered fully from the awful experience. Conditions and circumstances have steadily deteriorated since then. I would say more, but, this being a public forum and our society being commandeered by the politically correct watchpersons, I'll close with my best wishes for his safe return. P

I wanted to let you know my brother-in-law made it home yesterday safe and sound. He had an interesting trip. Was ready for good food and a good nights sleep in his own bed. Met many interesting people and was interviewed by different news agencies while there. I don't think he wishes to go back!

I visited Liberia in July, 2005. Just for the heck of it I did the search that revealed this post.

I may need to go to Monrovia on business travel - could someone give me some specifics about it?

I was in Liberia a long time ago. Before the whole place sank into barbaric warfare. Although there have been elections and the future is looking up, I do not recommend you go there. Just getting there will be an adventure in itself.

Are you serious? I was in Monrovia for about 2 weeks in July 2005. There's nothing there. . . no running water, no electricity. The hotel options are incredibly poor. A couple of them have their own generators so you'll have lights some of the time.

I'll watch this post . . . you can contact me at [email protected] if you want some more detailed stuff. I have a couple of friends who will be in Monrovia until next summer. They'd be glad to give you highly detailed info.

Take a flashlight!
