It is easy to get around Jordan, but you'd be better with a guide as they have a wealth of information of history, culture, people, food, customs, etc.

Do you want to travel with a group or independently?

There are lots of tour operators, but try contacting Royal Jordanian Airlines. They have a tour operation and offer pretty good prices. You also have a choice of hotels from budget to luxury.

We spent only two days on our way to Egypt and had a private tour with driver in a/c Mercedes for full day to Petra, and a day touring Jerash and Amman. Because it was a special promotion for people transiting thru Amman onward, we stayed at the airport hotel. Nothing special, but clean, besides we out all day and only slept there.

You'd probably want higher end hotels of which there are plenty in Jordan - especially in Amman and down at Petra.

You should try to spend at least 2-nts at Petra so you can enjoy the site before tourists arrive and see the sunrise, as well as after tourists leave and enjoy the sunset.

You might also want to spend a night out in the desert of Wadi Rum.

The Jordanians are very friendly and welcoming, the food is outstanding.

Check with Royal Jordanian or just do a search of "tour operator Jordan" and I'm sure plenty will show. Then maybe some posters can comment on specifics re itinerary and accommodations.

My family and I went to Jordan April 2002.Spent 3 days in Petra with local guide and day trip with bedouin guide to wadi rum area. The people couldn't have been nicer &the movenpick upgraded us to the presidential suite and allowed us to check out at 5:30pm without charge.Hotel sent car to pick us up at amman airport and arranged our guide who was worth every penny.

My wife and I got back from a trip to JOrdan and Syria last week. We used Guiding Star agency in Jordan and Nawafir Travel & Tours in Syria. They were both totally professional, everything they said they would do, they did (and then some!) We learned as we wnt that either agency could have arranged the other country as well. They both ahve websites, both were very reasonably priced, and we have nothing but postive things to say about both of them (and the same goes for Jordan and Syria!). You CAN get around on your own, the drivers are quite sane there, but while everything is marked in English as well as Arabic, it isn't marked well, and you will spend a goodly amount of time lost. It's so cheap (by US standards) you might as well get the guide and relax. You will definitely pick up on more of the culture with a guide to point things out and explain things. Enjoy!
