not to hijack this into a tipping thread, but should we tip them right after the trip, or in an envelope when we leave the camp?

Diane
We chose to tip just before leaving the camp.
We wanted to be able to tip individual guides separately so we took along lots of blank envelopes onto which we simply put the name of the guide and our own names and sealed the tip for that guide inside. We tried to give them in person but if we didn't see them we knew the camp managers would pass them on.

We also did an envelope for the rest of the camp staff behind the scenes and dropped the sealed envelope into the tip box or gave it to the manager too.

We tipped after each drive or ride. Didn't want to leave the guides hanging in question. Didn't bother about the envelopes either. Just good U.S. bucks. Same for the tip box. All the tips get divided at the end of the month for the staff and we just put cash in the box as we were leaving. We actually never saw the polers again, so we heard that unless you hand the tip to the guide yourself, you never know. Not to start a debate on the honesty of the managers, we just chose to set the guys mind at ease and let him know how much we appreciated him. We will do it the same way on this trip. If on a particular trip the guide does something out of the way, he knows you appreciate his efforts. Liz

We preferred using envelopes (the camp will supply them) and handing them to our guide and tracker when they saw us off on the tarmac. Or when it was a road transfer, just as we shook hands before getting in our car. If we had brought gifts, that was the time we gave them (in addition). The camp tip box was done earlier. In our case we always were assigned the same driver/tracker combo at each camp. When in Cape Town we tipped the staff each time we had a service and the housekeeper each morning (left in the room on the bed with a note).

Having spent some time with the managers at the small camps we stayed in we felt confident envelopes we did give them would get to the right people.
Moat of the time though we were able to hand them directly to the relevant guides/ polers.
Staff tip went into an envelope into the tip box before leaving camp.
