Food on "Luxury" Safari...
We are leaving for our safari later this week to Botswana & Zimbabwe. My question is what kind of food should we expect for the meals at the camps? My wife is a picky eater, but I'm telling her she has to try the food anyway!!
We will be staying at Mombo, Jao, Chikwenya camps, etc.

Thanks.

The food at Mombo when we were there last June was very good.

I don't have my diary to hand so I can't check the actual menu (yes I wrote it down) but generally:

Early breakfast would be tea/ coffee and something very light.

Brunch at 11-12 would be some hot dishes, not the standard breakfast fair though it might include sausages or bacon, but sometimes other stuff such as lasagne or something. Plus there was someone making fresh eggs as you ordered eg omelettes with chosen fillings. Fresh warm bread. Fruit, veg, fresh pastries. Fresh juice.

Plenty in quantity and a good choice.

That said I am not vegetarian and can't recall how much was suitable for vegetarians - not that you've said either of you are.

Dinners would include a served starter - something quite lovely such as cheese in filo parcels with a sauce. Main would be a buffet again with better selection including more veg and salads and hot dishes. One night was a steak with sauce, another night we had a BBQ outdoors in the kgotla (boma). Dessert would be served again and very good. With the meal you would have wine or beer or soft drinks as preferred.

After dinner guests would be invited to move out to the fire and enjoy a liqueur.

The food isn't gourmet but it is very good and just right. I still remember the fresh bread and the mixed fruit fresh juice.

Does this help?

For me I am just hungry and I ate already!

Ken, kavey did an excellent job of describing the food aspect of your safari. I'm not the most adventurous eater, but I've never come away hungry from any of the camps I've stayed at. In fact, on several occasions I've asked for recipes for certain dishes, which the chefs are usually very happy to share. If you or your wife are served a soup or appetizer that doesn't appeal to you, you can ask for a salad---the camps do their best to please you. Really, eating at the camps should not be anything to worry about.
Enjoy your trip, Steve

This is a 7/year old thread which "smith252009" revived to promote his/her company.
However, if the traveller is a picky eater, has allergies, food preferences or food they simply don't eat, be sure to advise your tour operators or direct to the lodge/camp... they'll do their utmost to accommodate - vegetarians (advise type), kosher, halal, etc.
