Final Itinerary.....2007
OK.
Just got the final (guaranteed) costs for June, 2007 safari. Will be using Roys. They will provide A/C cruiser/rover and will also provide either cell phone and/or sim cards for cell phone. Will advise later.
Here are the finals:
1 nt - Mt. Village Serena
1 nt - Manyara Serena
2 nt - Ngorongoro Crader Lodge
2 nt - Sergengeti Serena
3 nt - Kirawira
1 dayroom - Mt. Village Serena
Kennedy - AMS - JRO June 18, 2007
JRO - AMS - Kennedy - June 28, 2007
Business/First - KLM - 400,000 miles (AMEX).
I wish this forum had been around when I did my first safari in Kenya in 1990.
Thanks for the help and I will be here everyday - at least until June, 2007...

Great itinerary, but why so many miles?
I flew from JFK to Johannesburg last month on SAA in business class, and it was only 120,000 miles. Is it because you are in first class, and not business class? I also flew last year on Air France from JFK to Madagascar, and it was also 120,000 miles, which seems to be the "going rate" for business class ticket from New York to eastern and southernAfrica.

Patty is correct.
Had to use Sleazy Pass. But, I am 6'4" and 250 lbs. Not a small boy and I can not take a chance of going "steerage". Especially on a trip of this length. Took 1/2 of my miles, but saved $15,000.00.

dssxxxx, even at 400,000 miles, you got more than the "going rate," where miles are generally valued at between one and two cents by the airlines, and you got nearly four cents per mile.
My personal best was 120,000 miles for a $10,700 single business class ticket to Madagascar last year, or nearly nine cents per mile. And a few weeks ago I redeemed 50,000 miles for a $3,000 ticket to Kazakhstan and back from Turkmenistan, or six cents per mile.
While many bemoan the fact that its becoming more difficult to redeem miles, I haven't found that to be the case, but I plan 11 months in advance and I tend to go to less popular destinations (I don't use miles for flights to Europe, for example, since those are reasonably priced and I use them to build mileage).

Jules39......
No, I asked Roy's to call and "really" check on rates. When they got back to me, it was about a 3-5% increase over what they originally quoted. So, all in all, a good rate.
thit_cho.....
I had to use the miles....couldn't take a chance loosing the seats in BF.
But, they wanted 400,000 for BF to Rome from EWR in September and I ended up flying Alitalia for $5300.00 (for 2) for BF. I wouldn't use the miles for just over a penny per mile.
It took me a long time to save up these 850,000 miles and I will use them wisely.
Not counting the miles for 5 peeps first class from EWR to HNL in 1995..

On you trip will you be flying between locations? I ask because my husband is also 6'4" and about 250 or so pounds and we are having to pay for an extra seat on the planes in Botswana something I did not plan for. I have suggested a diet but that did not go over to well. Imagine that.

spiegelcjs - Well with the extra seat, you can take a lot more luggage with you - plenty of allowance for photography gear.
dssxxxx - nice itinerary. I wanted a similar itinerary last June, but I didn't book as early as you have and had to flip the itinerary. I think things work out much better the way you have it sequenced.
Bring a fly swatter. The tse-tse flies in the western corridor are mean.

spiegelcjs......the only flight we have arranged is Kirawira to Arusha on the last day. The trips between camps are relatively short and I have found on other trips to be "enlightening". Told my wife to be sure to bring a "sports bra".
lifelist........I have not informed my fair skinned Irish wife about any flies/insects/bug and/or snakes. The only thing she knows about is animals. Will leave the bug thing until right prior to leaving....
