Egypt Tours for adult/environmentalist couple
We urgently need your advise for a trip to Egypt in May. Best ways or tour operators to see interesting sites, how to avoid large groups, noise in Nile Cruise and pleasant hotels at a reasonable price.

I went to Egypt Jan 16, 2004 with Abercrombie & Kent. It was not cheap but the group was only 14, our Egyptologist was abolutely the best and EVERYTHING was included even alcohol except at the Sonesta St. George in Luxor. We were on concierge level at the Conrad Hotel in Cairo and they had happy hour from 5-7pm every night. I don't know what you mean by noise in Nile Cruise, ours was not noisey.

Do a search on this board for "Egypt" and you will find in any number of the posts, names of companies that can arrange what you are looking for.
While you will have a set itinerary (it's still called a tour) you can travel independently, as we did. The only time we were with a group was while on the Nile cruise (about 15 people) and yet still had plenty of time by ourselves. During our time in and around Cairo/Giza, it was just us and our guide & driver and set our own schedule.
Even tour operators that have set itineraries can modify them to meet your needs - just ask.

Any reputable tour operator whether at your home country or in-country in Egypt can arrange a private tour, where you have your own guide/driver while in Cairo.
When on the Nile Cruise boat, there is usually a guide for the English speaking guests (in our case we were a group of about 15 - certainly small enough); rest of time we did our own thing while on the boat. When in Luxor we did the group tours with the guide and we did meet some interesting people with whom we also ate our meals, went to a Light & Sound Show at Karnak Temple. Of course, you stay alone if you wish.
As to which Nile Cruise boat - there are the usual nice boats, A&K Sun B oat IV (very expensive & and have to book their tour); the Sonesta boats (though someone recently mentioned these need refurbishing); the Oberoi Philae (also nice, but has received conflicting responses); we were on the Movenpick with only 100 cabins (but not full) - but here too, this ship might need refurbishing, though since we traveled it might have been refurbished since.
I did read about a new boat The Nile Adventurer with only 30 luxury a/c cabins which might be something to inquire about, though it can be expensive; apparently they have their own docking space at various stops.
Whomever you contact - ask about the smaller Nile Cruise boats and ask for pictures and details, and of course, prices (vs. using those named above). There are some small boats out there, but you must specifically ask for these.
As to noise, we never heard any. Once on board our cabins were closed and a/c, so we had no problem with this issue.
Do a search on this board for "Egypt" or "Egypt Nile Cruise Boats" you should come up with names of tour operators. Lots of Luck.
