Driving in South Africa, including Cape Town, is very easy, or at least we found it so. As long as you have a local map you won't have any problems. The roads are not busy and are easy to navigate through.
That said, whether you need a car or not is up to you. Taxis are not expensive and are easy to find (though be aware that they do not all charge the same price - the price they charge is clearly displayed on the side though).
Also, where in CT is your accommodation?

Mitchb,
Getting around was easy, it was trying to drive a manual transmission in a right hand drive car on the opposite side of the road that was challenging for me, we had alot of laughs to say the least!
We rented from Avis only 2 days out of 4, one to drive the Cape Point route,Boulders (penguins) and the other day was through the Winelands & Spier(Cheetahs). Both were beautiful experiences. The rest of the time in Capetown we got around by walking and cabs. Was there last Nov/Dec, fabulous weather!

MitchB - we rented from Tempest and were really happy -they brought the car to us at the guesthouse, allowing us to get used to driving on the other side of the road in the neighborhood, before venturing out to the main roads.
Cape Town drivers are very considerate.
