Upgrade lover,

If you dont "taste" Africa using your itinerary then something is wrong. In my opinion you have designed a brilliant 12 day plan to visit Southern Africa. Well done

Very proudly part of the wonderful nation of South Africa

ttt

With another year upon us, I am sure there are many of us who are preparing for our next adventures!

118 days and counting for me as of this writing.

I am still waiting for confirmations on availability from a couple camps, but here is my tentative schedule:

Kasaka River Lodge, Lower Zambezi (3)
Chongwe River Camp, Lower Zambezi (2)
Luangwa River Lodge, South Luangwa (3)
Tafika, South Luangwa (2)
Puku Ridge, South Luangwa (2)
Cape Town in luxury self catering penthouse or villa (4)
Simbambili, Sabi Sand (3)

This will be my very first true high season safari! As a result, I am hopeful that in my 15 nights that I see triple what I saw on my 11 night safari last June, although I thought I saw plenty.

Anybody else? When and where are you going?!

Roccco -

A good thread to resurrect... certainly better then the "do you travel with your own bed linens?" found on the Other Topics board. Admittedly, it's one of the funniest threads on Fodor's... check it out if you have some time.

22-days and I'm on my way to Tanzania and Kenya:

Arrival Arusha - o/n Ngurduto
Fly to Grumeti - o/n Kirawira (3 nts)- finally after many trips will have the opportunity to see the migrating herds
Fly Grumeti to Zanzibar - o/n Karafuu (2 nts)
Stone Town - o/n Emerson & Green (1 nt)
Fly to NBO - catch up w/friends - o/n Intercontinental (1 nt)
Fly to Nanyuki, Pvt Charter to Sabuk (1 nt)
Camel safari to Loisaba - skybeds (2 nts)
Fly Pvt Charter to Nanyuki, Fly to Mara - o/n Cottars 1920 (2 nts)
Drive to Mara Bush Camp (1 nt)
Drive to Saruni Camp (1 nt)
Rtn Fly to Mara - moe bending elbows w/friends before heading home that night

Africa_lover - Glad to see you'll be staying at Honeyguide. HG was a favorite of ours when we visited in '01 (even if we did spend 2-nts at Singita). Would love to see photos of the refurbishing done at the original camp and those from the Matobeni camp. Do share these on your return. Happy travels.

I might have grown up in Brooklyn and for a brief second attended the same high school (a few years later) - but my name isn't Sandi (Barbra) Streisand!

It's still middle of the night out west... don't you ever sleep? Later.......

Sandi,

Sleep??? With 10 dogs...no, not really.

Actually I did get my four hours in last night. 4 hours during the week and about 6 + a daytime nap on the weekends is enough for me.

Too long! Can't wait!! We will be in Tanzania for 15 nights in late November-early December.
Itinerary:
IAD-AMS, overnight AMS.
AMS-JRO, overnight Kia Lodge.
Fly to Serengeti
3 nts Migration Camp
2 nights Ikoma Camp
3 nights Serengeti Serena Lodge
1 night Ndutu Lodge
2 nights Ngorongoro Serena Lodge
1 night Gibbs Farm
2 nights Swala Camp (Tarangire)

This will just be DH and myself and our driver/guide. I never, ever dreamed we would be going on a private safari! Booked our airline tickets ourselves using miles for business class (yay!). We designed the itinerary ourselves, with much help from all the Africa experts here on this board, and after pricing it with about 9 different outfitters, have put down our deposit with Good Earth. In the meantime, we're looking forward to Santorini and Folegandros in August...and contemplating bigger zooms for our cameras

In 17 days (May 21), I depart from JFK for Antananarivo, Madagascar.

General itineray is:

Perinet (two days) -- national park near the capital, but great for Indri (large, noisy lemur)

Morondova -- west coast, for beach and white water rafting and seeing Avenue of Baobobs

Berenty -- southern Mad, for ring-tailed lemurs (supposedly the best place in Mad to photo lemurs)

Short trip to a county that doesn't get a lot of attention on this board, but I'm safari'd out after 5 years of safari. Next year, I'm considering Zim (Hwange and Mana Pools).

Wow, I can't wait to read your trip report on Madagascar -- it is on the short list of places we're dying to see!

WooHoo..10 days and counting.
Can you tell we've not been to Africa before.

Cape Town - explore the winelands and the peninsula
Botswana - 3 nights each at Savuti, Kwetsani & Chiefs Camp.
Joberg - then home

I've got all my safari clothes laid out..yes Sandi, those dull kakai, beige and olive green outfits.
Since I just colored my hair I am not sure what season I am but my husband said I looked like Joan Jett..rock on!

I've really enjoyed reading everyone's itinerary and look forward to your trip reports! We leave in 16 days (May 21) for a week at Macatoo Horseback Safari in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. Then move on to Kwetsani. Here's hoping for swift horses and slow lions! : )

Thanks to everyone here who helped with this itinerary:

Depart Washington Dulles 8/6; return 8/22

Cape Town (12 Apostles) -- 4 nights
Namib Desert (Sossusvlei Lodge) -- 3 nights
Victoria Falls (Matetsi Water Lodge) -- 2 nights
Johannesburg (Westcliff) -- 1 night
Sabi Sands (Londolozi) -- 4 nights

I thought I was going to have to overnight in Windhoek on the way to the Namib Desert, but my new best friend Bronwyn at CC Africa was able to find me flights that would avoid that requirement.

Can't wait!

Ugh, over a year (June/July 2006). Itinerary not even hashed out yet!

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to many trip reports from all of you to sustain me.

Best wishes to all those leaving soon.

wallybrenda - I, too, have started setting aside clothing for our trip and yes, there are a "few" of those dull safari colors in there. Surprisingly, browns, tans and beiges are my best color, but I've included some great uplifting scarves. This girl's gotta do what she's gotta do...........

Opps..It’s Judy who is a "winter" and claims to look ghastly in safari colors.
I'm not sure what season I am, especially now with my accidental new hair color. But I seem to have a whole wardrobe of safari colored clothes. Heck, I may look ghastly in those colors too and just not know it.
You'll all have to decide that when you see our pictures upon return!
