Hi moremiles,
Sounds like your husband is more prone to infection then you are. In fact, it was once thought that men were more suseptible than women to TD. Later, studies showed that the handshaking habit between men was the cause for the spread in risk prone countries. As your Doc about Xifaxan. Tell your husband to keep his hands in his pockets. Take along a bottle of hand sanitizer. Cheers, CJ's husband.

First let me say that I agree 99.8 %of what KIBOKO said .

He is correct most doctors use and take Cipro for themselves and their families.

Also most doctors would not know about Xifaxan as it is not used that much and especially for Travellers Diarrhea.

Also , Xifaxan's main claim to fame is that it is not absorbed into the bloodstream...making it a bit more ideal for gastrointestinal infections..
but
you cannot use Xifaxan for other infections that require the entry of the drug into the blood stream.

About Brewers Yeast....yes it has been and can be used to treat diarrhea but it has only been shown to have some effectiveness against Clostridium difficile( bacteria) ..as some one has mentioned.

I also agree with KIBOKO, if you are on medication for diarrhea and you have a fever and/or blood in the stools... now this is a completely different medical situation....and I would advise to head for the hospital emergency.

Another thing about Pepto Bismol..it can give you black tarry stools.

Okay ,so you took some Peptol Bismol ,but now you have abdominal cramps( pain) and dark tarry stools.......hmmm
are you bleeding somewhere!!!?...if you say no it is just all due to the Pepto Bismol... Oh Really!!!... I would not want to make that connection as a final diagnosis.!!

Re- read KIBOKO's advice as to when to use the Cipro and Imodium combination.

if you take Cipro and you wind up not having had an acute bowel infection..then three tablets of Cipro will hardly cause you an further distress.

Hi KIBOKO... I am also a Professor of Medicine and my closest friends are all Pharmacists (own their own store).

My keenest interest right now is the Bird Flu possible epidemic and/or pandemic.

As I am sure you know KIBOKO that GlaxoSmithKline is working on a vaccine for the bird flu.
Hopefully by the year's end they can deal with the mutation problem.

I also want to Thank everyone who made comments about Cipro and other medications, as it was most enlightening to read all your comments and ideas.

It is so nice to share ideas on this forum and listen to other's experiences.

And finally Lucia78...you go and have a good time and write a trip report when you get back.

Good Night all

Percy

Thank you Percy for most informative post about Cipro. I am a nurse who works in a very busy medical office and one of the questions we get the most from people you are about to travel is, what do we do or take if we get sick? I was so impressed with your information that I printed it and brought it to the attention of the physician I work with.
He was also most impressed, adding that this is sound advise, and it is now the advise we give to our patients.
Most travellers are already well informed on the preventative measures to take, but if you are one of the unlucky ones that happens to get sick with diarrhea and vomitting, having the knowlegde on hand that you have provided is a great comfort. Buying a few medications such as Imodium and Cipro "just in case" is a small price to pay, considering the price you have paid for your vacation. If you don't need these medications, thats great. I personally would like to have these medications in my travel bag and have them expire, that would not bother me in the least, but if I needed them, I would be thankful to have them. Again thank you.

I'm back and pleased to inform you that I didn't need any cipro I had no stomach issues, until we hit Heathrow and then DC (and that was only because of the stress of all the security/travelling). Thanks for all the advice.
