Mairseydotes-
I shall quote my son, Jamie here -
"Mom, it's way safer to fly than to drive in a car on the city streets, let alone the highway - statistics prove this time and time again."
I have to believe him because he is a commercial pilot and flies small planes all of the time.
I am a nervous flyer, but I went up with him in the 4 seater Cessna one fine winter day - and it was so incredible that I forgot I was nervous. Except when he said -
"We are just going to fly through those mountains over ther now, mom"
That's when I closed my eyes and said,
"I think I left the kettle on at home, let's go back!"
We will be flying for I believe 5 or six legs of our trip in East Africa in May/June - and, even though I am a little apprehensive, I really am looking forward to it - to the scenery, and the thrill of the experience!

LyndaS: Yea!!! Your son is a pilot and you're going on a small plane, so now I'm sure that it's safe! I'm a bit nervous, but feel that it's the best thing to do given the time element. I'm going to get some Sea Bands and Dramamine "just in case". We'll be in Africa at the same time and I wish you a wonderful safari!!

I'm an odd one: despite suffering from awful travel sickness in cars, coaches and trains I don't get seasickness (even in force 10) and turbulence bothers me less in a teeny-tiny plane (where I can see all around the plane from my seat) than in a large plane (where I can't really see what's going on outside).

Certainly, turbulence can be quite noticable but not a common cause of accidents so... whilst I can't say I enjoy it, it doesn't panic me.

What I love are the views from one of these little planes.

Infact on our last trip one pilot let me fly all the way from one camp to another - he took off and then explained what I needed to do and I even lined us up with the landing runway and started bringing us down before he took over for the actual landing. I LOVED IT!
